One of the most nutritious powders/ podis in almost every Indian home ( especially South Indians )   is the drumstick leaf podi or powder. These humble trees are found growing  easily in many homes so our access to these medicinal leaves are not difficult, sadly many of us tend to take it for granted and do not add it to our daily dietary needs. These wonder leaves  are not only easily available but also have no side adverse effects.

Both the leaves and pods, dried and fresh are used in a variety of ways with many culinary uses. These leaves are also called Moringa leaves.

Moringa tree leaves , also called drumstick tree leaves commonly ( Moringa Oliefera, also called horseradish tree is a native to India and one of the most health enhancing plants Several recipes can be tried with these nutritious leaves in dosas, adais, chutneys and many other rice dishes, rasam , poriyals, curries etc.

We can make delicious drumstick leaves powder easily at home and mix it with rice and ghee and serve to growing kids and adults alike.

It is said to be better than multi vitamins as it has almost all nutritional needs at a cheaper cost and with no side effects.


2 cups washed cleaned , dried drumstick leaves.
2 tbsp udad dal
1 tbsp chana dal
5-6 dried red chilies
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp sesame seeds
A big pinch of asafoetida powder.
Salt as needed.
2 tsp oil


Make sure to clean the leaves, wash carefully, and dry them patting on paper towels , with no moisture in them .Keep aside to roast separately.

In a pan with a tsp of oil, fry the dals and chillies ,cumin seeds, sesame seeds,, when cooled powder them first.

With remaining oil dry roast the dried moringa leaves till crisp and not dark

When cooled grind to powder separately.

Add both powders, add salt and asafoetida powder,

Tastes good with rice and ghee mixed together.

Store well in air tight container.
Stays good for a fortnight.
