Paruppu thogayal powder / spicy lentil chutney powder.
A real life saver for the days when you don't want to slave in the kitchen yet do not want to compromise on taste and nutrition! These chutneys or thogayals as it is called in Tamil is a great boon that can be made within minutes . In fact in less than 10 minutes you can have a great tasting thogayal this not only healthy but lip smacking.
This recipe is even quicker showing you how lazy I can get too! Here we just prepare a bottle or container of the basic dry ingredients and when you decide to make the Thogayal, just add some fresh grated coconut and grind in mixie once or two turns to blend coconut with the coarse powder.
3/4 cup Toor dal/split pigeon peas
4-5 red dry chillies , (or as preferred by you )
Generous pinch of Asafoetida powder or crystals.
A marble size tamrind
salt as required.
1 tbsp sesame oil
Roast all ingredients except salt , slowly till a fine aroma wafts across, the tamrind will turn brittle.
Remove, keep aside to cool.
Store in a container , or a glass jar till required.
This is a tasty delicious powder which can be had with dosas or idlis too with a tsp of sesame oil.
To prepare the thogayal
Take 3 tbsp of the thogayal powder, add some grated fresh coconut, add a sprinkle of water and coarsely grind on or two turns in the mixie and your fresh thogayal is ready.
Some add 1/2 tsp of pepper and some cumin also in this recipe, I have skipped it.
