It is very convenient to have such ready to make Rasam mix at home rather than relying on store bought premixes as you cannot make your alterations, besides they are expensive too.

These ready to make powders come handy for business travellers who remain out of home and would like to prepare home made Rasam but with little or no difficulty . All you need is to add some chopped tomatoes or tomato puree , some chopped coriander leaves and a tasty rasam is ready under 4 minutes.

Keep some rice to cook in the rice cooker , roast some papads on the gas flame or microwave, and a simple meal of rasam, papad and rice with some readily cut fresh salad makes a lipsmacking meal.

This comes to the rescue for those who need home made food with less fuss.Your children can easily make this rasam and rice without bothering to measure ingredients and wasting time.Prepare such ready to make powders, pack in properly sealed packets,paste simple instruction on the pack and send it with your family members.

There are many days when I have resorted to this quick rasam , when I dont have much time to spare in the kitchen without compromising on the taste.

So the recipe....



3/4  cup coriander seeds
6-7  red chillies dry
1/4 cup Toor dal/pigeon peas
2 tbsp fried gram dla ( pottu kadalai )
1 tsp black pepper
2 tsp cumin seeds
Pinch of turmeric powder   
Big pinch of asafoetida powder or asafoetida crystals 
samll orange size  tamrind.
salt as required.
some curry leaves


Roast all ingredients to golden colour carefully, roast the tamrind well to brittle texture.
Separately roast the curry leaves till crispy.

When all ingredients are cooled well, grind to slightly coarse powder including curry leaves.

For tempering

2 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
2 tsp oil

In a pan add oil, let mustard seeds crackle when oil is hot, add cumin seeds.
Remove and let cool.

Add the tempered ingredients to the ground powder, mix well. Store in a air tight bottle.

To make rasam instantly.

In  a pan add some 2 tbsp of powder, add around 3 cups of water and add some chopped tomatoes, coriander leaves , or tomato puree..let boil till tomatoes soften.

Instant rasam is ready.

No need to temper as everything is added in the powder itself.
no extra dal need be added , but if you happen to have some cooked dal ready , use it and dilute rasam a bit .

The easiest way to make this rasam is in the pressure cooker by adding the water, powder, tomatoes, cilantro chopped, cover and allow 3 whistles , remove after cooled, mash tomatoes with ladle, add a drop of ghee for enhancing rasam flavor.

Note :

You can have this yummy tomato rasam instead of regular tomato soup in winter as it has several useful spices to ward off cold and provide sufficient heat in cold winter months , excellent as throat is soothed and prevents formation of phlegm.
Just add 2-3 tbsp in a mug, fill with 1 cup of water  and microwave for 2 minutes .
