Semiya Upma/Vermicelli Upma

Semiya upma or vermicelli upma is the easiest one dish to prepare when you are very hungry an need something fast. You can add as many  vegetables as you want to make it as filling as possible. Here I have shown the simplest one which can be prepared under 10 minutes flat.


1 cup roasted vermicelli/Semiya
1 tbsp green chillis or 2 red dry chillis
2 tbsp ghee or oil
salt to taste
1 tsp minced ginger
sprigs of curry leaves
1 tbsp chopped cilantro
1 1/2 cups water.
Pinch of asafoetida powder.
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp split udad dal


In a pan, add the oil, when hot add the mustard seeds, let it pop, ad the split udad dal, let it turn golden, add the chilllis, red or green, add the ginger, curry leaves and the water. Add the salt and let the water come to a good boil.

Add the roasted semiya in the hot mixture and stir well. Reduce the flame to medium and cover wit a lid and cook for 2 minutes. 
Open the lid when all the water seems to have been absorbed by the vermicelli, give a good stir, add  the cilantro,
Serve hot with chutney or sambar.

This is the simplest form of upma without adding anything, yo can ad sauteed . sliced onions, tomatoes or a mixed cup of vegetables, in that case you need to add  a little more water.
