Onion Chutney for Idlis, Dosas

Simple spicy Onon chutney with just three main ingredients to give you a tasty side dish or dip to smear your idlis or dosa.


2 cups peeled , shallots
1 small berry size tamrind
4 red dry chilis
Pinch of asafoetida powder
salt to taste.
2 tbsp sesame oil preferably
1/2 tsp mustard seeds


In a pan add some oil add the shallots, red chillis, saute well, turning shallots   around till they appear transparent.
Remove from flame and keep aside to cool.

Grind to a paste the red chill, onions, salt, pinch of asafoetida powder with the tamarind without adding water.
Take a small pan, add some oil, pop the mustard seeds and pour the tempering over the onion chutney.

This makes an excellent side dish or dip for Idlis and dosas and curd rice.
