Moong Dal sundal/Green Gram sundal

This is a very easy and quick sundal to prepare during Navaratri, we also make this quite often on other days too.
Sometimes I also add raw grated green mango to this sundal which imparts a very tangy touch .


1 cup soaked green gram/Moong dal/Paasi parupu
2 green chillis
2 tbsp grated fresh coconut
Pinch of  asafoetida
salt to taste
 2 tsp coconut oil./ any other oil for tempering.
1/2 tsp mustard seeds.
some curry leaves to garnish.


As the moong dal cooks very quickly and tend to be mushy, yo dont need to soak for long or overnight, just a 30 minute soak is good enough.

Pressure cook upto 1 or 2 whistles only..
Remove from cooker when completely cool, drain water if any and keep aside.
In a pan,add the oil, let it get hot, add the mustard seeds, when they pop, . add the drained moong dal, salt, pinch of asafoetida powder.
Meanwhile grind the coconut and green chillis to a dry paste.
Add  this paste to the  the moong dal, and mix well.
Granish with curry leaves.
