Arisi Upma Kozhakattai ( Steamed rice dumplings )

A great favorite among traditional South Indians to prepare this simple but very tasty Arisi upma Kozhakattai , steamed rice dumplings.

Again like any other dish there are so many possibilities and ways to make this very tasty, healthier too.Here am showing a simple basic rice dumpling recipe, you can make your own variations.


1 cup finely broken rice preferably steamed rice.
2 red chillies broken
1 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp split udad dal
1 tsp chana dal

 some curry leaves.
A pinch of asafoetida powder.
Salt to taste.
2 tbsp sesame oil preferably


In a pan add the oil, when heated, add the mustard seeds, let it crackle, add the chana dals, udad dal and red chillis, when the chillis turn crisp, add 3 cups water and add the asafoetida powder, salt, curry leaves and . Let the water come to a good boil, then add the rice rava and keep stirring while adding it slowly to prevent lumps from forming.Soon the rice rava will form a smooth mass. Switch off the gas and when somewhat cooled, , make small balls of the cooked mixture and place on Idli plates and steam for around 12 to 15 minutes.
The reason we are further steaming after it is cooked like upma , is that the rice grains are bigger than normal sooji or semolina and needs to be further cooked or steamed. After steaming, they will appear soft and ready to eat .

Serve with chutney , sambar or even with Idli chili powder.
